Code Through Quilt: The Story of Hidden In Plain View
Join Barbara A. Lyons, musician, choir director, and fiber artist from Alliance, for a lively introduction to Jacqueline Tobin's book, Hidden in Plain View. The book describes how some slaves were involved in a sophisticated network that melded African textile traditions with American quilt practices and created a potent result: African American quilts with patterns that conveyed messages that were, in fact, essential tools for escape along the Underground Railroad.
In addition to sharing this fascinating story, Lyons will display some artifacts that reveal the creative and clever ways African Americans used art to secretly communicate during slavery.
